The Best of the Best in terms of nuts and bolts information and sign-painting history; a real gem. Horribly edited once again as the editors feel they are doing us a favor just getting it digitally transcribed. A travesty! (comment) Hey I am looking for an editing job. Why don't you hire me? I have a high regard for getting something as precious as this little book transcribed correctly. Okay enough editor bashing (lol) !!! By the way that was the reason for only 4 stars. This is not a how-to book showing one how to become a sign-painter but for those much immersed in the craft wanting a fill-in-the-blanks book for all those questions we could never get answered. If one were to read this book "literally" as an existing sign-painter, not a novice, it simply fills in the gaps of a lifetime; of questions to the "stingy with their knowledge" journeyman who thought we would take their craft away if we knew too much. (comment) Didn't they get the shock of their life when technology did that job anyway?
Okay enough bashing already!!!
Right from the get-go, a simple method for measuring letters, telling which letters are narrower and wider and the optical illusion of letters placed next to one another; round letters for instance placed closer together because of the space that the roundness fools the eye with. A lot of the stories and I mean stories, take place in merry old England...the first sign of note having been painted by Benedict Arnold, a druggist (pre-traitor days, I suppose...lol!)
First story of note:
(comment) As a sometime fine artist, it has always grated on me that I am not able to spend more time painting masterful oil paintings. Turns out that according to history many fine artists "were" sign-painters/ fine artists and probably just as conflicted when they started getting more sign work than calls for their latest madonna pose.. I like this story of the two fine artists boarding at an inn and the proprietor asked them for their expertise in the creation of a sign. The two of them had a grand time of it! They made a two sided hanging sign, one image of a weary traveler graced the one side and the other side a smiling and refreshed traveler on his way from the niceties that the inn had provided. A great little story and one that really galvanized my feelings that a sign-painter and fine artist really are "ONE!"
2nd story of note:
There was an apprentice who mentored under a gold leaf man but not leafing proper, more just the basics of decoration of signs. The master touched briefly on glass gilding and let it go. When the apprentice left the situation for a school in France offering a free schooling, the apprentice thanked his benefactor and left for school. One of the first things they asked him was if he could gild glass gold. They were shocked when the apprentice with a bit of stumbling as it came back to him, showed them a little trick for using the fingernail to cut the leaf in half, theretofore by necessity using the entire leaf with much waste. A great little tale, but only of value if you are in the craft and understand the art of glass gilding. (comment) I was taught that right out of the gate by a famous gilder, Milt Ken at Thomas-Swan Sign Company in San Francisco back in 1980-81. It was funny because I used to bite my nails and there were times when I simply could not cut the leaf properly until I broke the habit of nail biting.
In conclusion,If one can sift through the editorial mis-transcription and glean the gold between the lines, they will find this a most pleasurable read.
Final dig of the spur! "Get it together Amazon... This is LITERATURE!!!"
